Cop placed under suspension

By City Correspondent

GUWAHATI, Sept 12 - Basistha Police Station sub-inspector (SI) Bhaskar Jyoti Nath has been placed under suspension after a complaint was filed by Ramani Kalita, the former Additional Director of Industries and Commerce, with the Commissioner of Guwahati, alleging that Nath had looted a huge amount of money from his residence in the pretext of seizure.

According to Kalita, the SI looted Rs 21 lakh from his residence situated at Beltola on Monday night.

Guwahati Police Commissioner Munna Prasad Gupta said an inquiry into the issue has been instituted.

"A team of Basistha police led by SI Nath had conducted a raid at the Subham Lodge owned by Ramani Kalita and allegedly took away his accounted money," the complainant claimed.

Although the accused police officer claimed that a raid was conducted at the lodge during which Rs 6.5 lakh in cash was recovered and three persons were arrested for gambling and betting, the complainant, however, refuted Nath's version, stating that the police officer in question had taken away Rs 21 lakh, which was nothing but his accounted money.

Police had also detained Kalita but he was released later.
