Cooperative societies in Sonitpur dying

JAMUGURIHAT, Feb 24 - The mouza-level cooperative societies of Sonitpur district are on the brink of death as these societies have been carrying rice from the FCI godowns to the societies� godowns without getting any carrier charge from the State Government since 2008.

The cooperative societies will get a total of over Rs 8.53 crore from the State Government as the carrying charge of rice. These societies are carrying rice for the poor consumers of the areas under the societies.

The cooperative societies at Nagsankar, Haleswar, No-1 Chatiya, No-2 Chatiya, Doomduma, Sirajuli, Bargang, Chillabandha, Borbhogiya, Murhadol, Balipara, Chariduwar, Ghuramari, Bhoirabpad, Amiyopur, Rangapara, Thakurbari, Borbhogiyapanbari, Borchala, Belsiri, Naharbari, Misamari, Tezpur, Singori etc., are supposed to get amount from the Government.

Among these, Nagsankar cooperative society has the highest amount of dues of Rs 20,54,151 while Haleswar has the lowest amount of dues of Rs 7,87,855. These societies render service to the rural people by supplying rice under various Government schemes.

These cooperative societies are facing a hard time as they are operating the business by taking loans from various sources, said Tapan Sharma, general secretary of the district cooperative society employees� association.
