By The Assam Tribune

Chester-Le-Street (United Kingdom), May 30: England beat Sri Lanka by nine wickets in the second test in Durham on Monday to take an unassailable 2-0 lead in the three-match series.

England reached their victory target of 79 in the final session on the fourth day after bowling Sri Lanka out for 475 in their second innings.

Earlier, Alastair Cook became the first England batsman to score 10,000 Test runs. England captain Cook remained unbeaten on 47 at the Riverside while N Crompton was the other not out batsman with 22 runs. Victory in this match secured an unassailable lead for the host in the three-match Test series following their innings and 88-run win in the first Test at Headingley.

Left-hander Cook reached the landmark when he clipped Nuwan Pradeep for four through mid-wicket, having got off the mark with an edged single against left-arm spinner Rangana Herath.

At 31 years and 157 days he was the youngest player ever to achieve the feat, beating the previous record of Indian great Sachin Tendulkar (31 years and 326 days).

Earlier, Dinesh Chandimals excellent hundred denied England a second straight innings victory as Sri Lanka, following on, made 475.

Chandimals 126 was his sixth hundred in 27 Tests but first outside Asia.
