By Correspondent

AGARTALA, Dec 7 - The conviction graph has been growing significantly from April to November this year in Tripura, bringing much relief to the law enforcement agencies, according to a report of the State Law Department.

During the 25-year Left rule, the conviction rate did not cross 14 per cent due to various factors political interference, faulty investigation and lack of coordination between the police and government agencies, sources said.

A total of 1,378 cases were disposed of by the CJM of West Tripura and a total of 1,153 accused persons were convicted after trial, which is 83.67 per cent. Only 225 accused were acquitted, constituting only 16 per cent.

In the High Court, too, there has been a jump in the number of bail rejections. During the period, altogether 146 accused persons had approached the High Court seeking bail. A total of 86 bail pleas were rejected by the High Court, which is around 58 per cent, while the number of bail pleas accepted by the court stood at 62, the report said.

Out of the total 53 cases related to challenging the verdict of lower courts, as many as 32 verdicts were upheld by the High Court (60 per cent), which is a positive sign for the State.

At the district court level, 39 criminals applied for bail petitions and 24 pleas were rejected by the court from May 6 to November 26. In case of the NDPS, 56 per cent bail petitions of the arrested persons were rejected by the Special Court, Agartala.

Lately, the State Government has raised three wings Crime Branch, Cyber Crime Branch and Narcotics and Drug Control Branch to tackle various crimes effectively.
