Convention of civil engineers begins

GUWAHATI, Oct 9 � The two-day 26th National Convention of the Civil Engineers of the country got under way at the Assam State Centre auditorium of the Institution of Engineers (India) (IEI) here today.

Inaugurating the convention, State's PWD Minister Ajanta Neog laid stress on good work culture among the engineers and improved engineering concepts and implementation of the projects for the improvement of the state and national infrastructure.

She said that the engineers should understand their responsibilities and help in nation building.

The Minister released the souvenir brought out on the occasion, while the technical proceedings of the event was released by Sisir Kumar Banerjee, chairman of the Civil Engineering Division Board of the IEI.

The first technical session of the convention on �tunneling technology in young geological formations� was conducted by renowned engineer SN Phukan, while its second technical session on �earthquake resistant structures and construction of green buildings� was conducted by Prof Anjan Dutta of the IIT, Guwahati.

In all, four papers were presented in the first technical session. These included the ones on construction of Pir Panjal Tunnel by Natm- a case study (DM Kudtarkar, S Satyanaik, Ali Hayri, AN Pandey, Manish Samel, HCC Ltd), construction of 14. 478 km-long head race tunnel of 600-MW Kameng Hydro Electric Project in difficult lesser Himalayan geology (Chandanmani Das, Dipankar Baruah, Partha Pratim Das, NEEPCO).
