GUWAHATI, Nov 1 - Glowing tributes were paid in memory of noted thespian and politician of yesteryears, Late Lakshyadhar Choudhury, who was a president of the Asam Sahitya Sabha, on his 101st birth anniversary at a function held at the Kumar Bhaskar Natya Mandir here on Thursday evening.
Late Choudhury, also a former Minister, was associated with the century-old Kumar Bhaskar Natya Mandir very closely. He was one of those towering personalities who gave the theatre hall a new lease of life in the late 1990s.
The birthday of Late Choudhury is celebrated as �Kitapor Din� by the Lakshyadhar Choudhury Trust.
Releasing a book titled Lakshyadhar Choudhury, edited by Professor Upen Sarma and published by Asam Sahitya Sabha, noted actor Dilip Hazarika, who was closely associated with Late Choudhury, described the latter as a person who was indifferent towards material prosperity.
Born on Dipanvita (Dewali) day 101 years back, Late Choudhury emerged as a vast sea of information because of his arduous efforts to collect information on various issues concerning the society and the people, said Hazarika, who is a senior advocate.
Speaking on the occasion, Asam Sahitya Sabha general secretary Dr Paramananda Rajbongshi apprised the gathering that the book on Lakshyadhar Choudhury was published in keeping with the 101st birth anniversary of the artiste. The Sahitya Sabha has in the meantime planned to undertake some activities aimed to keep alive the memory of the Late artiste.
Releasing Samajbadi Andolan Aru Asomor Aklanta Yodha Keijonman, written by former Minister Ramani Barman, noted trade unionist Rakhal Dasgupta recalled his association with former Chief Minister Late Golap Barbora, Late Choudhury and other socialist leaders of the State.
At the function, Prof Amarjyoti Choudhury, former Vice-Chancellor of Gauhati University and the eldest son of Late Choudhury, released an anthology of poems of late Pranabjyoti Das titled Hiranmoy Puwar Babe. The anthology has been published by Padumi Das, mother of the poet.
The book release function was followed by a brief cultural event where renowned violinist Manoj Barua and his troupe enthralled the audience with their presentation of Late Choudhury�s song � Amar Ghoroloi Jau, the hymn He Joy Raghuranandana He Raghava Ram He, besides a Hindustani classical tune.
Budding singer Nahid Afrin sang Kitapor Din with Dr Anjanjyoti Choudhury, the second son of Late Choudhury. The lyrics of the song were penned by Professor Amarjyoti Choudhury and set to music by Dr Anjanjyoti Choudhury. Nahid also sang a Dr Bhupen Hazarika number � O Jonali Dipanvita and drew applause from the audience.
Singer Gayatri Hazarika also rendered Late Choudhury�s Amar Ghoroloi Jau and Dr Bhupen Hazarika�s Rati Nibir Nibir� respectively.
