Contributions of Hiruda recalled

MANGALDAI, July 7 - People of Mangaldai paid rich tributes to legendary poet, lyricist and artist Hiren Bhattacharya, popularly called Hiruda by his followers, on his fourth death anniversary recently.

On the occasion, a public function of recitation and music was organised for the second consecutive year by a local cultural and literary youth organisation called Spondon on Monday last at Uttar Mangaldai Unnati Sadhini Sabha, Karimchak, Mangaldai.

Renu Konwar, president, Darrang district chapter of women literary forum Asom Lekhika Sanstha, marked the beginning of the function by lighting a ceremonial lamp in front of the portrait of the eminent poet.

This was followed by recitation of self-composed poems by a number of young and senior poets, including prominent writer and poet Barada Saikia, Jamuna Kalita, Dipjyoti Saharia and Kishore Das.

Apart from this, musical tributes were paid by Tutu Hazarika, Rakesh Arnab and a guest artist from Guwahati, Angshuman Sharma. Biren Kalita, Premada Bhuyan and Janaram Deka recalled the contributions of Hiruda to the literary and musical world of the State.

A local youth, Nirmal Ghosh, was also felicitated for clearing the prestigious State Civil Services Examination and finding a berth in the Assam Police Service, the results of which were declared recently.
