Construction of BOP stopped after Nagalands complaint

By CORRESPONDENT

DIPHU, Nov 16 - Construction works of a border police post was stopped by the Assam government after the Nagaland administration and police objected to it saying that construction cannot take place on a disputed area.

The Nagaland administration requested its Assam counterpart to stop border outpost construction work at Lahorijan stating that it was a disputed area, last week. The sensitive issue came up ahead of the formal announcement of the Naga Accord which is expected to be done in the second week of December at the inaugural ceremony of the Hornbill Festival to be organised on the fringes of Kohima.

Additional SP Hemanta Baruah, SDPO Magistrate Bokajan Bhaskar Jyoti Kalita, Eastern Range Rangapahar Ranger Dhoni Rongpi from Assam and his Nagaland counterpart were led by Magistrate of Maong, SDO (C) N Zubenthung Ngullie and others who discussed the matter at a site along the Assam-Nagaland border. After a long deliberation on the issue, both the sides agreed to take up the matter again in its second meeting which will be at the Deputy Commissioners level of the bordering districts.

It may be mentioned here that a vast track of forest land claimed by the Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council bordering Dimapur district in Nagaland is occupied by the people of Nagaland illegally in several contiguous areas. Numerous border skirmishes have taken place between the Assam Forest personnel, police and illegal settlers over the last 15 years, but the issue has remained unsettled.

On the other hand, Nagaland claims that the disputed portion of forest land actually belongs to it, according to an arrangement made by the Government of Indias agencies and as agreed by Assam Government when the new State was formed.
