Conspiracy to shift Howraghat subdivision office alleged

By Correspondent

DIPHU, Aug 23 - The people of entire Howraghat area of Karbi Anglong district have been demanding for a subdivision since the last three decades. Responding the long-standing demand, greater Howraghat was declared as a subdivision on January 1 this year by the Congress government led by the then Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi.

As per the declaration, the civil sub-divisional office was formally inaugurated by the then HAD Minister Kharsing Engti at the Howraghat PWD Inspection Bungalow on February 28, 2016. Since then the civil sub-divisional office has been running in a room only.

It is worth mentioning here that there are no other staff or offices except the only single office of the SDO Civil. On the other hand, no prompt action or concrete steps have been taken by the new government although during the last Assembly election BJP had promised to extend the administrative functions in the subdivision.

Meanwhile, Howraghat Subdivision Development Committee (HSDC) has expressed serious concern over the indifference shown by the State government towards it.

The HSDC in a statement has alleged that they are receiving reports from reliable sources that a section of vested interested people is trying to shift all the sub-divisional functionary offices from Howraghat to another place on the pretext of lack of sufficient land required for proper infrastructure of the subdivisional offices.

Meanwhile a committee that was constituted with senior advocates, litterateurs, journalists, senior citizens and many other civic organizations, has demanded setting up of a permanent civil sub-divisional office along with its related offices immediately at Howraghat so that official activities can begin.

It may be mentioned here people have agreed to donate a large grazing ground situated at Amoni gaon Hidibomglong, Beloguri and Dighalipar on the outskirts of Howraghat town for required official buildings of Howraghat subdivision.

But surprisingly, a section of vested interested people are indulging in a conspiracy to shift the subdivision from Howraghat to a remote hills area. Meanwhile, HSDC has demanded a stop to the activities of the group of conspirators and has threatened to start a vigorous agitation if the Howraghat subdivision is shifted to another place.
