JORHAT, March 22 � Inaugurating a national seminar on �harnessing science for societal development� here at the Assam Agricultural University (AAU) on Saturday Padma Bhusan environmentalist Chandi Prasad Bhatt said conservation of natural environment is the utmost need to escape the devastation of natural calamities.
Stressing the importance of environmental protection Bhatt, who is also the winner of Gandhi Peace Prize and the founder of Chipko movement, focused on global warming and its hazardous effect on Himalayan glaciers. Appraising the role of AAU in developing scientific-conscience among the masses, the Gandhian environmentalist argued for extending the university�s technological support for the farmers of the State who played the most significant role in the nation�s economy.
The seminar was organised by the AAU branch of Assam Science Society on the occasion of its 60th annual technical session.
Participating as a chief guest AAU�s vice chancellor Dr KM Bujarbaruah said that the public fund in research must yield public goods in terms of deliverable technologies for the benefit of the society, environment as well as science itself.
The Assam Science Society has also published a souvenir on the occasion. The seminar was attended by around 500 audiences. About 200 research papers and posters have been presented by the scientists from different universities, colleges and research institutes of Assam and other States of the country. The seminar was held on six concurrent sessions on the areas of physical science, chemical science, biological science, social sciences.
