SHILLONG, April 16 - Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma has reiterated his opposition to the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill and said that his Government would continue to resist it to protect the interests of the people of the State.
He said the issue is a matter of �concern� for the people of the region in particular and the country in general, and that it had featured prominently during the poll campaign for the Tura and Shillong Lok Sabha seats.
Sangma said that as the BJP has not changed its stance on the Bill, the State Government has come forward to assure the people that it would do everything to oppose it. �We will continue to vehemently oppose any move to enact the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill in the future,� he stressed.
Meanwhile, the Government has requested the Election Commission of India to allow implementation of projects in the State. Due to the model code of conduct, several projects have been stalled. As the polling for the two Lok Sabha seats in the State ended on April 11, the request has been placed before the poll panel.
