Congress wins Lakhimpur Panchayat poll

NORTH LAKHIMPUR, Feb 16 � The incumbent Congress has emerged as the clear winner in all segments of the Panchayat election in Lakhimpur district. According to the latest results, the party won 11 seats out of the 17 ZPCs in Lakhimpur district. The Opposition AGP managed to win only four ZPC seats while the AIUDF and an Independent candidate bagged one each. The BJP failed to open its tally in the ZPC election in Lakhimpur.

In 616 declared results for 810 GP member seats, the Congress won 293 taking a massive lead over the AGP which got only 160 seats. Independent candidates came second with an impressive result of 133 seats. The AIUDF got 21 GP member seats while the BJP, CPI and the CPM got two seats apiece. In the 75 declared results for 81 GP president�s seats, the Congress emerged victorious with 33 wins followed by Independents winning 25 and AGP 16. The AIUDF managed to register only one win, while the BJP failed to open its account.

Results were also declared for 51 Anchalik Panchayat member seats out of 81 in which the ruling Congress won 36 seats. The AGP got 12 and the AIUDF and Independents secured one and two wins respectively. The BJP failed to win a single seat.

Our Tezpur Correspondent adds: The counting of votes for the Panchayat election was completed today in Sonitpur district behind the time specified by the State Election Commission, Assam. The ruling Congress secured most of the seats in the eight LACs in the district.

In Dhekiajuli LAC, it secured four ZPC seats, 14 seats of Gaon Panchayat president and 12 seats of AP member. In Borchala LAC, it won three ZPC seats, 18 seats of GP president and 18 seats of AP member. In Tezpur LAC, it secured four ZPC seats, nine seats of GP president and eight seats of AP member. In Rangapara LAC, the party got four ZPC seats, 16 seats of GP president, 15 seats of AP member; in Sootea LAC, it won one ZPC, 13 seats of GP president, 15 seats of AP member; in Biswanath LAC, it got four ZPC seats, 13 seats of GP president and 16 seats of AP member. In Behali LAC, the party bagged four ZPC seats, 15 seats of GP president and 15 seats of AP member. In Gohpur LAC, it won four ZPCs, 30 seats of GP president and 30 seats of AP member.

District Congress president Nurzamal Sarkar, in a press meet, disclosed that the Congress won 28 ZPCs, 128 seats of GP president and 132 seats of AP member in the district. �The Panchayat poll result reflects the sincere efforts of the party made for the development of the rural people in the past five years,� he said. He added that the AIUDF has nothing to do in the region, terming it a religious party. The Opposition has totally failed in this election, he claimed.

The local MLA, Rajen Borthakur, who was also present in the press meet, thanked the people for their overwhelming support to the party compared to the previous Panchayat election. He added that the people�s verdict went in favour of the Congress because of the proper implementation of development schemes and employments benefit provided to the people.

Our Goalpara Correspondent adds: The counting of votes for the violence-marred Panchayat polls, which was held in the third and final phase on February 12 in Goalpara district, began from Friday for only six out of the 16 ZPCs as polling could not be held in 171 polling stations out of a total of 825 in the district, while in another 18, no polling could be held due to absence of any contesting candidates.

The poll results once again proved that the AIUDF is consolidating its grounds after it sprang up surprise victories in three constituencies namely, 37-Goalpara East, 38-Goalpara West and 39-Jaleswar in the district in the last Assembly elections. The Indian National Congress once again fared poorly with its lacklustre performance, while the AGP, too, did not perform well.

Out of the six ZPC seats results of which were announced, the INC bagged two, AIUDF three and AGP one, while an uncontested INC candidate already won Kuchdhowa (under the Rabha Hajong Autonomous Council area). Out of the total 30 seats of Anchalik Panchayat member, 29 results were declared so far. The INC won five, AIUDF 20, AGP one and Independent three, and the 29 results out of the total 30 Gaon Panchayats, the INC bagged six, AIUDF 18 and Independents five. The counting for the Budhuchar AP and GP under Matia ZPC was going on till the filing of this report.

Preetom Saikia, Deputy Commissioner, told this correspondent, �We are waiting for the State Election Commission�s instructions on matters relating to the other 10 ZPCs.� He also said that 78 per cent polling was recorded in the other 636 polling stations where polling was held without any major incident.
