Congress forms civic bodies at Hailakandi

HAILAKANDI, April 8 � Shyamali Roy was selected as the chairperson of the Congress-led Hailakandi Municipal Board. Altab Hussain Barbhuiya was selected as the vice chairman of the board.

They were administered the oath of office by the Additional Deputy Commissioner of Hailakandi, FR Laskar in a function. Former minister and advisor of the Chief Minister, Gautam Roy also attended the function.

Earlier, in a meeting of the newly elected members of the civic body, the name of Shyamali Roy was proposed by ward commissioner Amit Sen and it was supported by 12 of the total 16 members of the board. The Congress has 12 members in the municipal board, while the BJP has three, the other member being an independent.

The oath-taking ceremony was also attended by former board chairman Swapan Deb, district Congress committee president Ashok Duttagupta, general secretary Samsuddin Barbhuiya, among others. Another ward commissioner Saleha Begum Barbhuiya was nominated as the chairperson of the planning cell of the board.

Meanwhile, Bijoylakshmi Debnath and Niyati Banerjee were selected as chairperson and vice chairperson respectively of the Congress-led Lala Town Committee of Hailakandi district.

It can be mentioned here that the BJP candidates won in five wards of the ten-member committee, while the Congress won four seats. Bijoylakshmi Debnath won the other seat as an independent candidate, but Gautam Roy brought her to the party fold giving her the chairperson�s post.

The vote of Gautam Roy as an ex-officio member of the committee helped Congress to form the town committee. Deputy Commissioner of Hailakandi, Barun Bhuyan administered the oath of office to the new members at Lala.
