Cong wins 7 wards, BJP 5 in Imphal civic polls

IMPHAL, `June 6 - Even as the counting of votes in the Imphal Municipal Corporation (IMC) polls is yet to be over, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) which had won just a single Councillor�s seat in the last elections, managed to bag five seats out of 15 for which the results were declared on Monday.

The ruling Congress tops the chart with seven seats thus emerging the single largest party. Interestingly independent candidates have sprung a major surprise, with three of them declared elected till the report goes to press.

Altogether 86 candidates including 26 each of BJP and Congress for Councilor posts and 129 for Ward members seats contested for 27 and 54 seats of IMC this time. Imphal West district has 20 Wards while Imphal East district has seven Wards.
