NEW DELHI, March 11 - The Congress will continue to oppose the controversial Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016 and will not bring the Bill if it comes to power at the Centre, party president Rahul Gandhi said here today.

He gave this assurance to a delegation of the six communities from Assam on Monday that met the Congress president. Gandhi also assured them that their demand for grant of scheduled tribe (ST) status will be taken up within six months if the party comes to power. He said the Congress is committed to protect the unique identity of the Assamese people.

The delegation comprising representatives of the six communities, accompanied by AICC general secretary Assam in-charge Harish Rawat, State Opposition leader Debabrata Saikia and PCC president Ripun Bora and State Congress general secretary Kalyan Gogoi, called on Gandhi at his official residence.

Later a spokesman of the delegation told newsmen that the Central government did nothing to fulfil their demands.
