Cong will make strong comeback: Faleiro

By Correspondent

AGARTALA, Oct 18 - AICC general secretary in charge of Tripura Luizinho Faleiro, who arrived here today, said that the Congress in Tripura would make a strong comeback. The party organisation will be strengthened and agitation programmes will be undertaken in public interest, he added.

The veteran Congress leader held a series of meetings with Tripura Pradesh Congress Committee members, chiefs of the partys frontal organisations and former PCC presidents before addressing reporters at the Congress Bhavan .

In the Assembly elections last year, the Congress vote share hovered at 1.86 per cent, but in the recent Lok Sabha elections, our vote share soared to 25 per cent, which clearly shows that the Congress is already on a comeback trail, claimed Faleiro.

The AICC general secretary in charge of Tripura, a former Chief Minister of Goa, said that the party would launch a membership drive soon and a new PCC president would be named too.

It is not that we do not have any head of the party. There is an ad hoc committee comprising senior leaders, including former PCC presidents, who are looking after the party affairs very well, Faleiro maintained.

On the issue of the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, the Congress leader said that his party was opposed to it as it would further impact the identity issue of the indigenous people of the North East. He added that the NRC is irrelevant to the rest of the country, as it is meant only for Assam. Since the matter is in the domain of the Supreme Court, we should refrain from making any comments on the issue of the NRC, he maintained.

Faleiro flayed the BJP Government in Tripura for its alleged failure to honour the pre-election commitments, and said that the advice given to the youths of the State to go for poultry and cattle farming was an insult.

He asserted that the BJP Government of Tripura would fall under the weight of its own contradictions and non-performance.

Meanwhile, Faleiro also revealed that the issue of election to the autonomous district council election had also been discussed in detail. We support the demand for direct funding of the autonomous council and its further empowerment, he stated.
