DIBRUGARH, Jan 22 - The Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APPCC) is seeking to hold a mass rally in Upper Assam in mid-February with All India Congress Committee (AICC) vice president Rahul Gandhi as the star campaigner.
APCC president Anjan Dutta told mediapersons at the Circuit House here today that the party would assemble about one lakh people for the rally.
Rahul Gandhi will first take out a padayatra before addressing the public gathering. He will spend at least two days in Upper Assam to give a boost to the election campaign, the APCC president informed.
The Congress party is also training up about 7,000 volunteers from 100 Assembly constituencies out of the 126 in the run-up to the ensuing Assembly polls in the State. The Congress leader said that since victory depended upon the dedication and commitment of the grassroot-level workers, the party would focus on interacting, listening and discussing with the party workers at the grassroot level.
We will reach out to them, listen to them and prepare our modus operandi for the ensuing elections. We generally organise mass workers rally with the help of these volunteers and booth-level workers, he said.
The APCC president further said that candidate selection for contesting the polls will largely depend on the assessment drawn from interacting with the grassroot-level workers of the respective constituencies. Sitting MLAs or a candidate from largely populated community of the LAC may not be the criteria for selection this time, he said.
He further reiterated that the Congress would bag at least 70 to 71 seats in the forthcoming Assembly elections without any alliance with any political party.
