AGARTALA, May 25 - Tripura Pradesh Congress, which has no MLA in the 60-member Assembly, has increased its vote share from 1.7 per cent to 25 per cent, relegating the Left Front to the third position in the State politics, the results of the Lok Sabha elections indicate.
Tripura Congress president Pradyot Kishore Debbarman, while thanking the voters for reposing faith in the party in the Lok Sabha elections, said that the Congress is on its way to becoming the main Opposition party. He said his party would play the role of a constructive Opposition on behalf of the people of the State.
Debbarman, accompanied by Pragya Debburman and Subal Bhowmik who unsuccessfully contested the Lok Sabha polls as the party candidates, and party vice president Pijush Kanti Biswas also condemned the post-poll violence across the State.
�A terrible situation prevails across the State. Supporters of the Opposition parties are being attacked and their properties being vandalised by miscreants associated with the ruling party,� he alleged.
Meanwhile, the ruling BJP has rubbished the allegations of post-poll violence. �No BJP supporter is involved in post-poll violence as the party does not believe in creating terror. Those who are indulging in violence, are not BJP members,� maintained party spokesman Dr Ashok Singh at a press conference here today.
He added that Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb, who is in New Delhi, has already asked the State DGP to take all possible steps to check the violence.
