Cong victory in Assam will impact polls in NE

By Sobhapati Samom

IMPHAL, May 14 Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) president Gaikhangam said the victory of Congress in Assam Assembly election will have a profound impact in the forthcoming Assembly elections in the North East particularly in Manipur which goes to poll early next year.

Reacting to the Assembly poll results of Assam where the ruling Congress retained power for the third time, the MPCC president said, the result of the Assam Assembly election shows that anti-incumbency is not a factor but the performance of the government that is counted by the public.

He congratulated Tarun Gogoi and his colleagues for their hattrick victory.

The MPCC chief, who was the Public Works Minister in the Okram Ibobi-led Secular Progressive Front Ministry, opined that who knows the big defeat of Left Front in West Bengal Assembly election may happen in Tripura too.

The Congress leader, responding to a question in an interaction at the Congress Bhavan here last evening asserted the Congress will get a majority in the ensuing Imphal Municipal Council election to be held on May 25 next. We will get not less than 16 to 17 seats(out of 26), he claimed.

The defeat of Nagalands former Chief Minister and veteran Congress leader S C Jamir in the Assembly by-poll is the defeat of the system in Nagaland, MPCC president Gaikhangam said while replying to another question. He alleged there is no rule of law, whoever rules there uses the power.

He, however, opined that the former Chief Minister would have won very easily if the bypoll was free and fair. Jamir, a five times Nagaland Chief Minister and former Governor of Maharashtra and Goa lost to the ruling Naga Peoples Front candidate Toshikopba Longkumer.
