By Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, March 16 - Taking note of a report that appeared in The Assam Tribune recently (under the headline of Girls were exploited mentally, physically in the newspapers March 13 issue) regarding young girls employed in the guise of the beauty and wellness sector under the Pradhan Mantri Kaushal Vikas Yojana (PMKVY) allegedly been subjected to mental and physical exploitation, Leader of the Opposition in the Assam Legislative Assembly Debabrata Saikia today called upon Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal to order an enquiry into the matter and to take steps to assist the victims.

I would like to draw your attention to a report published in The Assam Tribune newspaper on 13th March, 2019, which revealed that a group of economically weak girls from various parts of Assam faced mental and sexual abuse in Hyderabad after being given employment in the beauty and wellness sector under the Pradhan Mantri Kaushal Vikas Yojana (PMKVY) a few months back, Saikia said in the letter to the Chief Minister.

He added, I believe you will agree that such an unwanted and unfortunate outcome of one of the Prime Ministers flagship schemes should not be condoned. In particular, the dignity and modesty of our women must be protected at all costs. Therefore, I request you to (i) order a comprehensive enquiry into the matter, (ii) take urgent action to assist those victims who are still working in Hyderabad and (iii) take steps to prevent recurrence of this type of entrapment/abuse of the women of Assam.
