Cong to bring no-confidence motion against Manipur govt

By Correspondent

IMPHAL, July 30 - The Opposition Congress has issued notice for a no-confidence motion against the BJP-led coalition government ahead of the monsoon session of Manipur Assembly which begins on August 10.

Congress MLA Keisham Meghachandra said the notice has already been served in the State Assembly.

He stated that the Opposition party has pitched for the no-confidence motion due to the State governments alleged failure to hand over a 2018 drugs haul case to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).

Meghachandra alleged that high-profile leaders of the ruling front had interfered with the investigation.

Another Congress MLA Th Lokeshore appealed to the public, including the civil society organisations and media, to cooperate in taking the case to its logical conclusion.

On July 15, Congress had demanded transfer of the drugs haul case to the CBI.

The case pertains to a seizure 4.595 kg heroin and 2.80 lakh World is Yours (WY) amphetamine tablets worth around Rs 27.79 crore in the international market by a team of Manipur Police from eight persons in and around Imphal in June 2018.

It may be recalled that the BJP-led government had recently plunged into a crisis after nine members of the ruling coalition, including four ministers of the National Peoples Party (NPP), walked out of the alliance to join the Congress-led coalition - Secular Progressive Front.

However, after a meeting with BJP national leaders and NPP chief and Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma, the rebel NPP legislators returned to the coalition while three BJP MLAs resigned from the Assembly and one Trinamool MLA was disqualified.

One dies in mishap: One person was killed and 16 others were injured in an accident involving a bus in Manipurs Senapati district on Wednesday.

The bus, on its way to Dimapur from Imphal, met with the accident near the Autonomous District Council office at the district headquarters, 60 km north of Imphal around 7.20 am. One person escaped unhurt in the accident.

The injured were evacuated to a nearby health care centre. The cause of the accident is yet to be ascertained.

The deceased has been identified as Rishikanta alias Heiton (28) of Imphal.
