GUWAHATI Nov 24 Targeting the Opposition for running a baseless malice campaign against the Congress party, Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi today asserted that the Congress would have a sweeping victory in the coming Panchayat elections.
Addressing party workers at a Congress workers rally organized at the Khanapara Veterinary College ground today, Gogoi warned the AGP, BJP and AIUDF that false propaganda on issues like migration or violence would not fetch them anything as the people now understand such political gimmicks.
They take out huge rallies on the foreigners issue ahead of elections, but they dont bother to check the voters list which is being updated now and raise their objections on any doubtful citizen. People now understand very well that the tall claims of these parties are never meant to be fulfilled, Gogoi said.
A number of Congress stalwarts were present on the Congress show of strength, where around 20,000 Congress workers, including the grassroots workers of districts and subdivisions, took part.
Reiterating his pledge to hold the Panchayat elections on time, Gogoi further added that the Congress believes in decentralisation of power, and by holding the Panchayat election on time, it would keep its promise once again.
Gogoi said that the Panchayat elections would be held in the State in the month of January next year.
Contradicting the Oppositions allegations regarding the failure of the government machinery in the BTAD, he said that the situation was handled by the Government in the most efficient manner.
There are forces in Assam, which do not want peace and development in the State for their vested interests. But such incidents would not affect Assams growth, he mentioned.
Earlier, Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) president Bhubaneswar Kalita lambasted the AGP for not holding the Panchayat election during its tenure. The AGP did not want democracy, particularly at grassroots level, but it was the Congress which returned the peoples power to the grassroots people, he said.
Jaidev Jena, looking after the AICC affairs in Assam, DoNER Minister Pawan Singh Ghatowar, Minister of State for Tribal Affairs in the Union Cabinet Ranee Narah, and senior Congress leader Hemo Prova Saikia, among others, also spoke on the occasion.
