Cong seeks White Paper on economy

By STAFF REPORTER

GUWAHATI, June 22 - Congress today called upon the Assam government to release a White Paper on the States financial situation.

Assam is moving towards financial collapse. A recent report stated that 50 per cent of the States population could fall into extreme poverty if the situation does not improve soon. There are reports that even the salary of government employees is uncertain in the coming months. On one hand, the government is setting up new toll plazas, and on the other it does not even have the finances to pay salaries. Works on various schemes have ground to a halt. We demand a White Paper from the government on the States financial condition, Ripun Bora, president of the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC), said during a press conference here.

The State Congress said that it will prepare chargesheets highlighting the alleged failures of all the legislators and ministers of the ruling alliance and organise public meetings to discuss those across Assam on June 30.

State BJP president Ranjeet Kumar Dass had recently said that the ruling party will prepare report card of all its MLAs and ministers. But we want to ask him what have the MLAs and ministers of the ruling alliance achieved in the last almost four and half years. In fact, we will prepare chargesheets against all MLAs and ministers of the BJP and its alliance partners. Our mandal committees will prepare these documents from now and till June 29. The failures, broken promises, corruption and mismanagements committed by all the MLAs and ministers of the BJP and its allies will figure in the respective chargesheets.

And on June 30, we will hold public meetings at all the mandals across Assam where we will publicly read out and discuss the chargesheets, said the State Congress president.

He also accused the BJP of using the COVID-19 pandemic and the quarantine rules for gaining political advantage.

Recently, our party MP Gaurav Gogoi and former Union Minister Ajay Maken went to Manipur in view of the prevailing political uncertainty in that State. But, BJP is so frustrated and apprehensive that Gogoi and Maken were forcefully put into quarantine when they reached Manipur. It was part of BJPs ploy to save its State government there. But, we want to ask why Petroleum Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, who came from Delhi and visited Guwahati and Baghjan, was not sent into quarantine? Why was Union Minister Rameswar Teli allowed to roam around after he had arrived from Delhi? Our MPs were sent to quarantine after they arrived from Delhi but the MPs of BJP were not quarantined, said Bora.
