Cong salutes soldiers martyred at Galwan

By STAFF REPORTER

GUWAHATI, June 26 - Accusing the Centre of failing to show alertness in dealing with the situation in the Line of Actual Control (LAC), principal opposition Congress today called upon the government to take a firm stand against China.

Along with the rest of the country, the State Congress also organised Shaheedon Ko Salam Divas at various places across Assam to pay homage to the 20 Indian Army personnel who recently attained martyrdom at the Galwan Valley in Ladakh.

In Guwahati, Congress leaders and workers, led by former Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi, paid homage to the martyrs at the War Memorial at the Dighalipukhuri park.

Today we assemble to pay respect to the brave soldiers who laid down their lives at the Galwan Valley fighting heroically against the Chinese Army... We are proud of the Indian Army. Our soldiers are brave and skilled. They have played a key role in maintaining the unity and integrity of the country, said Gogoi. He criticised the Central governments role in the entire episode.

The most unfortunate part was that they (the Indian soldiers) were unarmed, as a result of which they lost their lives in the hands of the Chinese Army who used all sorts of brutal methods. It was due to the mistakes and wrong policies of the government and due to the lack of alertness and vigilance on the part of the Central government that these brave young soldiers had to sacrifice their lives. We want the government to take all necessary measures and to provide necessary arms and ammunition so that our Army can fight against the Chinese Army and thwart the nefarious designs of China, Gogoi said.

He added, We are solidly behind the Indian armed forces. At the same time, we request the Government of India to take a firm stand and deal firmly against the aggression of the Chinese Army.

Similar events were organised by the Congress at all the district and block headquarters.

APCC president Ripun Bora paid tribute to the martyrs at Kamalpur. This day has been dedicated by the All India Congress Committee in honour and memory of the brave soldiers who sacrificed their lives recently at the Galwan Valley. We want to ask Prime Minister Narendra Modi why he allowed the Chinese Army to intrude into our territory and why Indian Army personnel were sent to fight with the Chinese Army unarmed, he said.
