Cong protests against anti-farmer law

By Correspondent

BARPETA, Oct 10 - The opposition Congress party on Saturday organised a protest here against anti-farmer law introduced by the Central government. Hundreds of Congress workers led by the president of the State unit of the party, Ripun Borah, started their protest march from Dangarkuchi to the office of the deputy commissioner here. Ripun Bora was seen driving a tractor and some farmers accompanied him.

Addressing his partymen, Bora accused the present government of indulging in corrupt practices in all activities and said that the people of the State have understood the flattery of the government led by the BJP. He said that there has been an unprecedented flow of people in favour of Congress in the State and he is sure about its victory in 2021 Assembly election.

Regarding the recent scam in the recruitment of sub-inspector of Assam Police, Bora said that the investigation conducted by the Assam Police against their own men can be expected to be impartial. He also indicated that as long as Sarbananda Sonowal remains in the helm of affairs in the State administration, fair investigation is not possible.

Referring to the proposed alliance with the AIUDF, the Congress president said that it is still in a nascent position but it can be said that present incumbent party in each constituency will get first preference.

Later talking to reporters, Bora said that they are in constant touch with the new political outfits Raijor Dal and Assam Jatiya Parishad. Bora acknowledged that both the parties have some reservation regarding alliance with Congress and have publicly refused any ties with the party. But he expressed the view that his party will keep the door open for them and is optimistic about a change in their decision.

Barpeta MP Abdul Khalek said that the BJP since it assumed power in the State has been engaged in anomalies one after another. He alleged that BJP ministers and MLAs are entangled in the SI recruitment scam which will be unearthed only after an inquiry by the CBI.

MLAs of Chenga MLA Sukur Ali Ahmed, Baghbar MLA Sherman Ali Ahmed, Sarukshetri Pascim Goalpara MLA Jakir Hussain Sikdar were also present during the agitation programme.

Dhemaji Correspondent adds: Several Congress party workers of Dhemaji on Saturday staged a protest on National Highway-15 at Gogamukh, Dhemaji and Jonai opposing farm Acts introduced by BJP-led Central government.

The members of Dhemaji District Congress Committee and other Block Congress Committees during the protest shouted slogans against Prime Minister Narendra Modi and State Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal for supporting the farm Acts, and said the Acts would severely harm the poor farmers on their economy.

The protesters demanded the Central government to repeal the controversial farm Acts, while they raised demand to institute a CBI probe into the irregularities of police sub-inspector recruitment in the State.
