Cong protest in city over demonetisation

GUWAHATI, Jan 18 - Congress members today staged a demonstration in front of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) campus here in protest against the Union Government�s decision to demonetise the legal tenders of Rs 500 and Rs 1,000.

The Congress members, who came from different parts of the State to take part in the protest programme, assembled on the bank of the Dighalipukhuri this morning.

At an impromptu meeting held on the bank of the Dighalipukhuri, All India Congress Committee (AICC) general secretary Dr CP Joshi, Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) president and Rajya Sabha member Ripun Bora, former chief ministers Tarun Gogoi and Dr Bhumidhar Barman, Assam Congress Legislature Party (ACLP) Leader Debabrata Saikia, former APCC president and MP Bhubaneswar Kalita, AICC secretary Bhupen Bora, former minister Pradyut Bordoloi, among others, spoke on the adverse impact of the demonetisation policy on the country�s economy. They also spoke on the other �anti-people steps� of the Narendra Modi-led Union Government.

The Congress members later staged a demonstration in front of the Reserve Bank for about an hour. The police arrested APCC president Ripun Bora, Bhubaneswar Kalita, Pradyut Bordoloi, Bhupen Bora and several others. This agitated the Congress members and the administration announced the arrest of around 500 other agitators.

The arrested Congress members were detained on the bank of the Dighalipukhuri for some time and were later released, said an APCC statement here.
