Cong MP against NEEPCO merger

By Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, Oct 10 - Senior Congress party leader and Lok Sabha MP from Kaliabor constituency Gaurav Gogoi has opposed the proposed merger and acquisition of North Eastern Electric Power Corporation Limited (NEEPCO) with other public sector undertakings (PSUs).

In a letter to Raj Kumar Singh, Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Power, Gogoi stated that the merger will affect the people of the North East significantly.

NEEPCO was established under the North East Council not only to tap the hydropower potential of the region but also to ensure overall socio-economic development. As 95 per cent of the employees under NEEPCO is from the North-Eastern region, a merger will strip away the employment and other benefits that are offered to the people within the North-Eastern region, said the Congress MP.

I appeal to the Ministry of Power to revisit this decision. In revisiting it, stakeholders concerned must be involved in decision making and remedial measures must be pronounced. I hope you will cooperate with the growing fears of unemployment of the residents here as a result of this merger, he added.
