Cong MLAs stage walkout on Rohingya issue

By Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, Sept 6 - Some Congress MLAs today staged a walkout from the Legislative Assembly after Speaker Hitendra Nath Goswami did not allow legislators Sherman Ali Ahmed and Jakir Hussain Sikdar to raise an adjournment motion regarding the issue of the plight of Myanmars Rohingyas.

Ahmed and Sikdar had given notice for an adjournment motion to discuss the plight of the Rohingya people, thousands of whom have in recent times been forced to flee their homeland in Myanmar and cross over to Bangladesh. Some Rohingyas have even moved to India.

The Speaker, however, refused permission to the MLAs to raise the matter and said that the issue is not a State subject and so the House is not the ideal forum to discuss it.

However, despite the Speakers ruling, Sherman Ali Ahmed persisted in raising the matter.

Speaker Goswami asked him to let the proceedings of the House continue and added that his ruling was final.

Then Congress MLA Abdul Khaleque said he was staging a walkout in protest against the Speakers decision. A number of Congress legislators also walked out of the House.

However, some Congress MLAs, including Rekibul Hussain, Rekibuddin Ahmed and Nazrul Islam did not join their colleagues immediately but remained seated at their place for some more minutes. However, later they were also seen going out of the House.
