DIPHU, April 9 � The Congress party has in recent times embarked on a membership drive under the initiative of HAD Minister Kharsing Engti in different places of Karbi Anglong.
While addressing a meeting held at Howraghat town recently, Kharsing Engti asked the Congress members to work for the development of the common people in their respective areas of operation. Politics should be for the general welfare, and not a means only for self development, he said. It was the bounden duty of the members to motivate the grassroots level workers, he said, while stressing that loyalty towards the party at all times was of utmost importance.
Claiming overall development in the State as well as in Karbi Anglong during the Congress tenure, Engti reminded the electorate about the former anti-people rule of the ASDC-CPI(ML). Welcoming the decision by a section of workers and supporters of the BJP and HSDP to leave their respective parties, Engti exhorted them to engage themselves in social development activities.
While speaking about the steps undertaken on the educational front in the Howraghat area, he said that after the introduction of arts and science, he had in the meantime asked the KAAC to introduce the commerce stream immediately in the higher secondary school and college level too.
Meanwhile, he urged all sections of the people to wholeheartedly support the Congress for good governance and in order to adequately address the various social problems.
Local MAC and Social Welfare EM of KAAC, Premala Beypi and EM Ashok Teron also addressed the meeting and warmly welcomed the BJP and HSDP workers and supporters into the Congress fold. It may be mentioned that altogether 79 BJP workers, including a few workers of the HSDP, have joined the Congress party recently.
