Cong leader shot dead at Jonai

JONAI, June 25 - Unidentified miscreants last night shot dead one Hiranya Doley, Congress leader and a resident of Dekapam village under Simenchapori Police Station in Dhemaji district.

According to report, four miscreants equipped with fire arms entered at his residence at around 8.30 pm and one of the miscreants shot him with pistol from close range, while he was sitting at the veranda.

Meanwhile, senior police officers of the district rushed to Dekapam and made spot verification. The police have recovered an empty cartridge and a pair of hawai footwear left by the miscreants at the spot. A case has been registered in Simenchapori Police Station and investigation is on to nab the culprits.

Though none of the insurgent groups has owned the responsibility, police suspect hand of �Liberal Democratic Council for Missing Land� behind the killing. Having intelligent input that the insurgents might be hiding at the hilly area at Assam-Arunachal boundary, the police and paramilitary forces are conducting search operation along the boundary at Deka and Seren areas.

Police said that the insurgents earlier served him extortion letter demanding a ransom of Rs 2 lakh which was not paid. He was also warned by the outfit for taking initiative to surrender a cadre of the insurgent group.

Irate people later staged protest on NH-15 at Dekapam, demanding early arrest of the culprits involved in the killing of Hiranya Doley, who earlier served as the chairman of Integrated Tribal Development Project at Jonai.

Dhemaji district police recently apprehended the self-style chairman of the insurgent group Rupam Patir alias Ruhan Patir and Abhijit Doley, a hardcore cadre. Earlier, also the duo was arrested by the police at Tezpur in 2012. The LDCM chief during police interrogation confessed that his organisation was formed in 2009.
