Cong leader meets Mahanta

BARPETA, Jan 20 - Assam Pradesh Congress Committee spokesperson Abdul Khalek, who is the MLA of Jania Assembly constituency in Barpeta district, had an impromptu meeting with former Chief Minister and ex-president of Asom Gana Parishad, Prafulla Kumar Mahanta here this afternoon at the office of the AGP Barpeta district committee.

Mahanta was here in connection with a meeting at Mandia and met party leaders and office-bearers of the district committee. Accompanied by Satyabrat Kalita, Kumar Dipak Das and Gunindra Nath Das, Mahanta was attending a meeting with a large number of party workers, when Khalek entered the office to the surprise of all present there. The AGP leaders received Khalek very cordially.

Later, talking to reporters, Khalek eulogised Mahanta for his bold steps in the interest of Assam and the Assamese. He termed Mahanta as an uncompromising leader who can dedicate whole heartedly for the people of the State.

Khalek hinted that at a time when there is a strong wave in favour of the BJP, an understanding between the AGP and the Congress for the ensuing Panchayat election is the need of the hour.

Terming the BJP as a fascist force, he expressed the hope that an alliance of the secular forces will relieve the people of the State from the fascist and communal forces.
