Cong gets simple majority in Morigaon

MORIGAON, Feb 13 � The Indian National Congress (INC) got a simple majority in Morigaon Municipal Board (MMB) securing 6 seats in the 11-member body. In the counting of MMB election held yesterday, the ruling INC won in 6 seats, followed by the BJP in 3, AGP in 1 while an Independent got 1 seat.

In ward No 1, INC candidate Julie Nirmalia defeated her nearest rival Anjali Das of the BJP by a margin of 224 votes. In ward No 2, Manju Sarma Baruah (AGP) won the seat defeating her nearest rival Geetamoni Kakoti of BJP by 257 votes. Dhaneswar Das of INC captured ward No 3 defeating his nearest rival Digen Kumar Hira (BJP) by 104 votes.

In ward No 4, BJP candidate Lohit Kalita defeated his nearest rival Nabajyoti Tamuli of CPI by a margin of 144 votes. Likewise, in ward No 5 Madhusmita Deka of BJP defeated her nearest rival Manjuri Gohain of INC by 107 votes. In a neck to neck fight of ward No 6, Archana Bardoloi of INC defeated her nearest rival Anil Thakuria of Oikya Mancha by only 41 votes. In the significant fight of ward No 7, Maimul Sultan of BJP defeated his nearest INC candidate and outgoing chairman of Morigaon Municipal Board Mahibur Rahman by 74 votes. In ward No 8, Srimanta Medhi of INC defeated his nearest rival Prabin Medhi(BJP) by a margin of 80 votes. In ward No 9, independent candidate Ranjit Deka defeated his nearest rival Mridul Bordoloi of INC by 159 votes. In ward No 10, Pramila Roy of INC defeated Bibi Baishya of Oikya Mancha by 55 votes. In ward No 11, Shahnaz Khanom of INC defeated Jyotshna Begum of BJP by 130 votes.

It may be mentioned here that all the winners of the MMB are greenhorns in the political field of their respective parties. Some of them even came to their parties as members just before the civic poll. So what will be their performances in coming days only time will say.
