Cong gears up for panchayat, Lok Sabha polls

By Staff Correspondent

DIBRUGARH, July 4 - The Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) in its day-long extended executive committee meeting today resolved to expose the Bharatiya Janata Partys (BJP) failures, false promises, anti-people policies, financial scams, polarization and intimidation tactics of the saffron brigade among others, in the run-up to the ensuing panchayat polls and subsequent Lok Sabha elections.

The meeting held at the Dutta Parkland was attended by senior party leader and former Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi, former APCC presidents- Paban Singh Ghatowar and Bhubaneshwar Kalita, Congress Legislature Party (CLP) leader Debabrata Saikia, Deputy CLP leader Rockybul Hussain, All India Congress Committee (AICC) secretaries Bhupen Bora and Rana Goswami, MPs, MLAs, ex-MLAs and ex-MPs of the party, all District Congress Committee presidents, APCC office bearers, representatives from affiliated organisations such as Seva Dal, Youth Congress, NSUI, Minority Cell and few others. The meeting was presided over by APCC president Ripun Bora.

The meeting discussed at length on several issues under five different heads- political, economic, organizational, law and order and National Register of Citizenship. For obvious reasons, the media was not allowed to cover the proceedings of the closed-door extended executive committee meeting.

APCC general secretary and senior spokesperson of the party Apurba Kumar Bhattacharjee later told The Assam Tribune that the meeting resolved that Congress will move out to the nook and corner of the state to tell the masses how they were tricked, defrauded and won over by the BJP with false promises and communal politics. We will alert the people about the BJPs polarization tactics. We are observing that the BJP has been trying to destroy the secular fabric of the country by spewing the venom of communal divide. They are also engaged in picking Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) cadres for some of the constitutional posts of the country in an attempt to saffronise the whole administrative and governing system.

Simultaneously, in order to strengthen their party, non-BJP men and women are threatened and arrested on false cases, said Bhattacharjee.

Further, the Congress spokesperson said that during the tenure of the UPA government, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had criticised the then Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, saying that the Manmohan Singh was relaxed on the issue of sealing the international border of the country.

Today, after the completion of four years in power, Modi-led government has failed to seal the border. Where is his 56-inch chest? Besides, the Sarbananda Sonowal-led state government here had been speaking about protecting jati, mati and bheti. But today they appear to revoke the Assam Accord by bringing in the Controversial Citizenship Amendment Bill, 2016. They are hatching a conspiracy against the people of Assam, said Bhattacharjee.

The meeting also discussed price rise, GST and Tax system of the BJP-led government, law and order problem, alleged syndicates and organizational matters etc. among others.
