Cong gears up for Assembly polls in Karbi Anglong

HOWRAGHAT, April 12 � The Congress party has geared up its election campaign for the upcoming Assembly elections in Karbi Anglong hill district. To woo voters towards them various strategies are being adopted at the grassroots.

The Congress is organising numerous public meetings in various areas claiming proper governance during their regime.

Besides holding such meetings, various social welfare assistance materials have also been distributed among the beneficiaries. Moreover, this time, the recently formed peace organisation with the name People�s Alliance for Peace Agreement (PAPA) which is a conglomeration of Karbi Anglong�s main Opposition party Autonomous State Demand Committee (ASDC) along with 28 different communities has really been creating a headache for the Congress. It needs to be mentioned here that the PAPA which is led by the ceasefire UPDS and ASDC has now become the main opposition party for the Congress.

The Congress held a meeting at Sathgaon, west Karbi Anglong under Hamren subdivision in which the KAAC EMs including local MLA, Dr Mansing Rongpi and HAD Minister Kharsing Engti sharply criticised the PAPA and ASDC.

In his speech, Engti revealed that whatever talks have been held with the State government, these were carried out on his initiative and the pressure he exercised over the government.

He further reiterated that to resolve the issue of UPDS, a ministerial panel will be formed shortly. Moreover, he reiterated that the State government is always ready to solve all types of issues of different communities but their demands will have to be under the Constitution.

The Social Welfare EM, Premala Beypi, local MAC and EM Sing Teran, Agriculture EM, Mongal Sing Engti also addressed the public meeting.

At the meeting social welfare items like mosquito nets, looms, blanket and prosthetic materials were distributed.

Stress on environment protection: Students, teachers and guardians planted saplings at Howraghat recently in a function organised by the Assam Science Committee in association with the Howraghat Town Girls High School at the school�s premises.

Before the programme, Tarun Handique, headmaster, Howraghat Town Girls� High School addressed the student�s assembly. Handique highlighted the need of giving importance and protection to nature. �The world is grappling with complicated environment issues that are affecting all of us as well as generations to come,� he added.

He advised students to spread the message of awareness towards the need to protect nature and to get united to combat climate change so that it becomes everybody�s responsibility to protect the planet.

During the day-long programme, students and teachers planted different varieties of saplings around the school compound. Besides, quiz, art and extempore speech competitions were held among the students.
