Cong for stern action against misuse of social media

GUWAHATI, June 10 - Assam Congress Legislature Party (ACLP) and the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) have called for stringent steps against those who have been misusing the social media to defame and taint the images of the revered saints, women, ethnic and religious groups and politicians, said a press release here.

A delegation of the ACLP and the APCC, led by Leader of the Opposition of the State Assembly Debabrata Saikia, met Additional Director General of Police (CID) AK Jha and with the support of screen shot of a recent post on Facebook in which one Debojit Roy posted to the �Vox Populi� group reprehensible comments on the great Vaishnavite saint Srimanta Sankaradeva.

The delegation also presented evidences of seven similar acts of abuse and slander posted on the social media against women, ethnic and religious groups and politicians.

Alleging that the apathy and lackadaisical attitude of the State government and the police was �providing tacit encouragement to such cyber criminals�, the delegation asked the police administration to immediately arrest Debojit Roy.

The delegation included Wazed Ali Choudhury, Chief Whip, ACLP, Abdul Khaleque, spokesperson, ACLP, Nandita Das, MLA, Jakir Hussain Sikdar, MLA, APCC general secretaries Pradyut Bhuyan and Pankaj Borbora, APCC secretaries Prafulla Das and Sailen Kalita.
