Cong facilitates migrant workers return to WB

By Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, May 17 - The State unit of Congress party today arranged for transportation of 119 migrant workers hailing from West Bengal who were stranded at various places in Assam due to the nationwide lockdown.

The Congress party arranged five buses to transport the stranded persons. The chartered buses departed from the ISBT here at 11 am this morning for Howrah in West Bengal.

The 119 migrant workers of West Bengal were stranded in Kamrup Metro, Kamrup and Cachar districts. It is noteworthy that Congress president Sonia Gandhi had recently directed all Pradesh Congress Committees to facilitate transportation of migrant workers and other stranded people across the country.

Accordingly, the entire expenditure for hiring of the five chartered buses and for transportation of the migrant workers from Assam to West Bengal has been borne by the State Congress.

Crores of people have been affected on account of the lockdown and among the worst sufferers are the migrant workers. This has happened on account of the short-sightedness of the government and its failure to formulate proper plans, said State Congress president Ripun Bora.

He added that the State Congress has also started a helpline to facilitate return of people of Assam who are stranded in other states.
