GUWAHATI, June 10 The State government today asserted that the people of Assam have the right to know the actual facts and figures regarding the economic condition of the State before the coming Assembly elections and dared AGP chief Chandra Mohan Patowary to bring a motion in this regard in the Assembly session beginning next month.

Addressing mediapersons here, government spokesperson Himanta Biswa Sarma said that the people should not be fed fabricated news on the economic status of the State and assured that the government will participate with a constructive attitude in the motion, and if necessary, will even extend the Assembly session so that there is a fair debate.

Sarma also said that the entire proceedings would be telecast live so that the people can judge for themselves how the State has fared in the last decade on all economic fronts including service, agriculture and industry.

This challenge has been thrown to the Opposition AGP as its chief in a press meet yesterday castigated the Tarun Gogoi government for failing to deliver on the economic front by citing figures from a performance score card that has ranked Assam in the 29th position based on performance from April 2009 to February 2010.

Referring to this score card, Sarma said that this is a monthly progress report based on the Twenty Point Programme (TPP) and regretted that the AGP chief has furnished half-truths trying to mislead the people.

Patowary should have checked facts before blaming the government. He has not provided the latest data on the TPP monthly progress report, said Sarma, mentioning that the latest progress report from April 2009 to March 2010 has indicated that the economy of the State has improved on several parameters.

On the SGSY scheme, the achievement of the State from April 2009 to February 2010 was 45 per cent which increased to 78 per cent by March 31, 2010. The achievement in the Rajiv Gandhi rural electrification scheme was 117 per cent from April 2009 to March 31, 2010 which was 29 percent from April 2009 to February 2010.

Patowary is trying to give the impression that this is an overall score card which is not, said Sarma, adding that the achievement would fluctuate in the monthly progress reports depending on a host of factors.

On the other hand, Sarma said that the Opposition should read the writing on the wall and refrain from defaming their motherland. Sarma said that people will always reject such parties as they have done in the council polls.
