By Sobhapati Samom

IMPHAL, Jan 18 - The ruling Congress in Manipur will form local bodies in at least 20 Municipal Councils(MCs) and Nagar Panchayats(NPs) out of 18 MCs and eight NPs across four valley districts excluding Imphal Municipal Council (IMC). The polls to IMC is expected to be held in April or May next.

Deputy Chief Minister Gaikhangam who is the president of Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee has claimed this while speaking at a reception of the newly-elected MC and NP members here on Monday.

He claimed the Congress has secured majority in more than 20 MCs and NPs as most of the Independent candidates have extended support to the ruling party.

The result of the recent election clearly indicated that people have faith in Congress. Let this local body poll be the springboard for 2017 Assembly polls, he told party workers.

The final tally of the results of the Municipal Council and Nagar Panchayat elections which was declared on Saturday puts Congress at 108, BJP 62, LJP four, CPI two and Independent 102. Earlier, nine Councillors (five Congress, one LJP and three independents) and 162 Ward Members were elected unopposed.
