NORTH LAKHIMPUR, Nov 3 - Dr Hema Hari Prasanna Pegu of the Congress on Wednesday filed his nomination for the by-election to the Lakhimpur HPC, which was also the last day of filing of nomination.

The Congress candidate filed his nomination before the Returning Officer of the Lakhimpur by-election, Debeswar Malakar, in the presence of many party leaders and supporters.

Dr Pegu was accompanied by APCC president Ripun Borah, Rajya Sabha MP Ranee Narah, Chaigaon MLA Rekibuddin Ahmed, Mariani MLA Roopjyoti Kurmi and former Bihpuria MLA Bhupen Borah.

Later, Dr Pegu addressed a poll rally at Rajiv Bhawan, the head office of the district Congress committee. Other Congress leaders also addressed a poll rally at Gogamukh.

On the same day, Hemkanta Miri of the SUCI also filed his nomination for the by-election.

Meanwhile, the Returning Officer of the Lakhimpur by-election stated that five candidates are in fray after the scrutiny of nomination papers. The scrutiny was done today in the presence of two election observers, Rajendra R Sabhen and Benudhar Behera, here.

In another development, the Returning Officer of Lakhimpur by-election, Debeswar Malakar, has initiated disciplinary action against Jayanta Sonowal, Deputy Director, District Economic and Statistical Department, for his absence from duty as the incharge of the election control room.
