MIRZA, April 17 - The Guwahati Lok Sabha constituency is likely to witness a straight fight between Congress and the BJP. Queen Oja of BJP and the Congress candidate Bobbeeta Sharma have been organising a series of road shows in various parts of the constituency with their supporters to woo the voters.
The Guwahati constituency comprises 10 Assembly segments, including Dudhnoi (ST), Boko, Chhaygaon, Palasbari, Hajo, Barkhetry, Jalukbari, Guwahati West, Guwahati East and Dispur.
This time, altogether, 17 candidates are in the fray for the Guwahati Lok Sabha Constituency. They are Bobbeeta Sharma (INC), Queen Ojha ( BJP), Manoj Sharma (All India Trinamool Congress), Abhijit Chakravarty (Bharatiya Gana Parishad), Sadek Ali ( Republican Party of India), Pankaj Das (Swarna Bharat Party), Partha Pratim Baruah (Voters Party International ), Mamoni Sharma ( Purbanchal Janta Party � Secular), Rajiv Kakoti (Hindustan Nirman Dal), Ratul Sharma Choudhury (Samajwadi Party), Rubi Neog ( Indian Republican Congress), Alimuddin Ahmed (Ind), Upamanyu Hazarika (Ind), Utpal Borgohain (Ind), Junmoni Devi Khaund (Ind), Faruk Ahmed Bhuyan (Ind) and Shankha Sinha ( Ind).
Experts, who are closely monitoring the election dynamics, are of the view that though the main fight is likely to be confined between Congress and the BJP, yet Independent candidates are expected to play a crucial role. Citing an example, they said Upamanyu Hazarika, who is an Independent candidate, is likely to hit the vote bank of the BJP as he has a strong presence in the rural areas for voicing the rights of the indigenous people. Similarly, in the last election, AIUDF�s candidate Gopinath Das polled 1,37,258 votes in his favour. But the party (AIUDF) has not fielded any candidate in this election. So, the minority voters may extend their support to the Congress candidate. As minority voters play an important role, Bobbeeta Sharma is likely to get more minority votes. On the other hand, Queen Oja (BJP) is now focusing on the rural areas with development agenda.
In the last election, the AGP candidate Birendra Prasad Baishya pocketed 86,546 votes and those votes may shift towards Oja as the AGP has now an electoral alliance with the BJP. So considering the situation, the main battle is likely between the Congress and the BJP.
