Cong bags 4 out of 6 LACs in Barpeta dist

BARPETA, May 19 - In spite of a debacle of the party all over the State, the ruling Congress showed some strength in Barpeta district. The party won four out of six Assembly constituencies here. AGP and BJP managed to win one seat each.

In 40-Sorbhog, BJP nominee Ranjit Kumar Das retained the seat by defeating his nearest rival of Congress Anurupa Hannan by a margin of 19,526 votes. While Das received 56,454, Hannan got 36,928 votes.

In 43-Barpeta, Gunindra Nath Das of AGP won the seat by a margin of 5,810 votes against his nearest rival of Congress Abdur Rahim Ahmed. Das got 63,563 and Ahmed 57,753 votes.

In 44-Jania, Abdul Khaleque of Congress defeated his nearest rival of AIUDF and sitting MLA Rafiqul Islam by a margin of 29,736 votes. Khaleque got 86,930 and Rafiqul got 57,194.

In 45-Bagbar, sitting MLA Sherman Ali Ahmed, who has shifted allegiance from AIUDF to Congress and contested the election, won the seat by a margin of 43,433 votes against his nearest rival Sheikh Abdul Hamid of AIUDF. Ahmed got 73,340 and Hamid got 29,907.

In 46-Sarukhetri, Jakir Hussain Sikdar of Congress received 70,062 votes defeating AGP nominee Chittaranjan Barman by a margin of 24,247 votes.

Sitting MLA and PHE Minister Sukur Ali Ahmed retained 47-Chenga defeating his nearest rival AIUDF nominee Manowara Khatun by a margin of 23,357 votes. Ahmed got 51,882 and Khatun 28,525 votes.
