GUWAHATI, Sept 11 - People of the eastern part of Kamrup Metro district today carried out a protest in their locality against the reported decision of the district administration and Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) to shift the dumping ground from Boragaon to Chandrapur area. The matter was reported in a section of the media.
In order to raise a strong voice against the decision, a huge public meeting was also held at Chandrapur yesterday evening. The meeting decided to carry out a series of protest programmes and as a first step it called a 12-hour bandh in the area from 5 am to 5 pm today, but called it off after a meeting with Kamrup Metro Deputy Commissioner Biswajit Pegu.
In course of the meeting with representatives of various organisations of the area, the DC clearly stated that the news of shifting of the dumping ground was totally false and misleading.
Talking to The Assam Tribune after the meeting, DC Pegu said, �The situation took such a turn because a section of the people misinterpreted the news about shifting of the dumping ground. It is true that as per direction of the National Green Tribunal the GMC is going to close the dumping ground located at Boragaon. But it is not true that the dumping ground will be shifted to some other place in the district. The concept of dumping ground has today become outdated. Rather, it is time to set up solid waste management plants. We are working on it.�
Meanwhile, locals of the area alleged that they became agitated as some political leaders like West Guwahati MLA Ramendra Narayan Kalita and some senior officials including GMC Commissioner Debeswar Malakar made some confusing statements over the matter. Today all sections of the people of the eastern part of Kamrup Metro district extended their support to the protest. Most of the business entities remained close even after the discussion with the district administration.
In the meantime, people of the area also made it clear that they would come to the street at any moment if the GMC and the district administration make any attempt to set up the dumping ground in their area in the coming days.
Explaining the current plan to manage the garbage of Guwahati, senior engineer of the GMC Manojit Buzarbaruah said, �We have to close down the dumping ground at Boragaon at the earliest as per direction of the National Green Tribunal. Now we are planning to set up four solid waste management plants in four corners of the city, for which we are now looking for open spaces. With these four plants and by streamlining the waste segregation process we hope to manage all waste products produced in the city every day, in the coming days.�
The public delegation with whom the DC held talks included AASU members Tutumoni Kalita and Mridul Kumar Das, member of the district Tribal Sangha Dhiren Chandra Basumatary, member of Hajongbari Gao Sabha Boloram Hazarika, member of Chandrapur Gao Sabha Shiva Rajbongshi, former student leader Bishnu Kalita, social workers Dhiraj Das, Rajen Orang, Kanak Das and others. Chandrapur Circle Officer Pallav Jyoti Nath also took part in the meeting.
