Confusion over bandh call at Nagaon; normal life affected

NAGAON, Aug 29 - Amidst confusion over a 12-hour bandh call given by Khilanjia Oikya Mancha, the normal life was affected here today. Some offices remained opened but banks and other financial institutions were closed. Although regular classes in educational institutions began in the morning but later a half holiday was declared. Likewise, vehicular movement to and fro Nagaon town was affected after the morning hours.

Business establishments were also opened in the morning but later some youths, whose identities are yet to be traced, forced the businessmen to close their shutters.

Deputy Commissioner Shamsher Singh called for a citizens� meet, where representatives of political parties, student bodies, mediapersons and prominent citizens were invited. The meeting appealed to the people to maintain peace and harmony.

In the meeting, representatives of khilanjia organisation said that they had not given a call for Nagaon bandh today. Administration assured to inquire into the matter.

Meanwhile, another person Monoranjan Das, brother of Raju Das, was arrested by the Nagaon Police from Jagiroad area. With his arrest, the total number of arrested persons in the Nagaon incident has gone up to five.

The licence of the tractor agency allotted to Raju Das was cancelled by the company for his controversial role in the Nagaon incident. Two persons are yet to be apprehended.

It is alleged that a huge amount of public money of Nagaon Municipal Board was misused by Das Metal Craft in the name of repairing and supplying of garbage carrying vans. This was disclosed by social activist Alok Bhattacharjya. People have demanded a probe into the incident.

Khilanjia organisations have also alleged that Raju Das�s firm was involved in misappropriation of a huge amount of government money in the name of distributing subsidized tractors by selecting fake beneficiaries.

Moon Bora, the pro-talk ULFA activist and his accomplices, who were arrested in the Nagaon incident, were released earlier. Injured Moon Bora, who was released from GMCH on August 28, stated before mediapersons that they were invited by Raju Das on that day for flood aid but later he with his friends physically assaulted them. They were aiming to kill him, he alleged.
