Concern over rising road accidents

By Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, Jan 8 Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi today expressed concern over the sudden increase in the number of road accidents in the State and called upon the Transport Department to prepare a comprehensive road safety action plan in consultation with the concerned departments like Police, Public Works Department etc.

Official sources said that chairing a meeting of the State Road Safety Council this morning, Gogoi said that the road accidents were matters of serious concern and a time bound action plan should be prepared to check road mishaps. He said that while preparing the action plan, the Transport and other departments should make proper case study of the accidents to find out the real reasons so that appropriate steps can be taken to check those.

Gogoi pointed out that there have been allegations that fake licenses should be checked immediately and the Transport Department along with police should launch a statewide drive to detect fake licenses immediately.

The Chief Minister also directed the Transport Department to set up driving training schools, in the PPP mode if required, to ensure proper training of drivers.
