DERGAON, May 12 - The All Sachi Growers� Association of Assam (ASGAA) has expressed concern over the attack of pests on agarwood (locally called sachi) trees. According to the ASGAA, pests attack the sachi trees and eat away the leaves and bark after which the trees perish. As a result of this, the sachi growers are at a great risk. The Association today sent a memorandum through the SDO (Civil), Titabar, to the Forest Minister and the Forest Commissioner to redress the problem being faced by sachi farmers.
The memorandum, signed by Lakhidhar Bora and Bikash Bora, president and secretary of ASGAA respectively, urged the Government to take timely action in this regard. The memorandum also urged the Government to keep strict vigil on unscrupulous traders of agarwood who are cheating farmers by procuring sachi trees at low prices in upper Assam.
