Concern over Latasil playground as I-Day central function venue

By Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, Aug 3 - The Latasil Playground Development Committee has expressed concern at the preparations being carried out by the State government to hold the central function of the upcoming Independence Day celebrations at the said venue.

In a statement signed by committee member Jagannath Das, the development body alleged that by doing so the State government has violated their own assurances made before the court.

In 2012, the then Additional Advocate General of Assam on behalf of the State government in connection with a writ petition, had informed the Gauhati High Court about changing the venue for Independence Day and Republic Day celebrations.

The writ petition was filed by a group of citizens representing the Latasil Playground Development Committee, with a prayer for judicial intervention in the matter.

Jagannath Das said that as part of the celebration the administrative machinery always imposes various restrictions in the entire surrounding area which cause immense trouble to the local people.

Deputy Commissioner of Kamrup (Metro) Biswajit Pegu informed that although the administration is considering both the Judges Field and Latasil Field as the venue for the central function of Independence Day, no decision has been taken yet.
