Concern over high incidence of child trafficking in Kokrajhar

KOKRAJHAR, Oct 29 - High incidence of child trafficking in Kokrajhar has become a major cause of concern, said Malati Rani Narzary, chairperson of the Child Welfare Committee, Kokrajhar.

Speaking at a day-long workshop on child trafficking and child protection, which was held at Kokrajhar circuit house recently, Brahma appealed to the participants to keep a close watch on the situation and to initiate steps to prevent such a menace in the society and to protect innocent children from the scourge of victimisation.

She also pointed out that the practice of child marriage in many parts of the district still remains unnoticed or unreported, as a result of which child abuse and crimes like child trafficking are taking place. She, therefore, appealed for a concerted effort of the NGOs to motivate the people and take up adequate awareness drives, especially in the far-flung and remote areas to stop child marriage and at the same time also to prevent child trafficking from this area as a source point.

Bidyut Medhi, secretary, DLSA, Kokrajhar, Bishnu Narzary, Chairman, Kokrajhar Municipal Board, Digamber Narzary, Chairman, NEDAN foundation, among others, also attended the workshop and gave speeches.

A good number of social workers, child right experts, members of Juvenile Justice Board and Child Welfare Committee of Kokrajhar, ward commissioners of Kokrajhar actively participated in the programme.

The district-level workshop was organised by District Child Protection Unit (DCPU), Kokrajhar in association with State Child Protection Society, Guwahati.
