Concern over BTAD violence

By Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, May 7 Voicing grave concern over the spurt in violence in Bodoland Territorial Area District (BTAD) of Assam in the last few days where a number of lives, including those of children, have been lost, the National NGO Child Rights Coalition (NNCRC) said urged the State Government to take immediate steps to track those responsible for the killings of innocent children and also appealed to the agitating groups both underground and over ground not to resort to violence which has deleterious effects on the mind, body and spirit of children.

Children are the supreme assets of our nation and they are, by and large, helpless against any sort of violence. As a result of this helplessness, they either become direct victims of violence or indirectly because of the assaults and killings of their care providers which leave them vulnerable to various other forms of neglect and abuse, it said in a statement.

Further, it said, political issues need to be settled politically without, at the least, affecting the well-being of children. Therefore, all non-state as well as non-state players, when in conflict situations or areas, need to exercise maximum restraint while confronted with children, it added.

India is a signatory to the Convention on the Rights of the Child which makes the state responsible for the overall protection and development of children. The state parties are responsible for ensuring that all children within the jurisdiction of the state are in a safe and secure environment, NNCRC said.
