SHILLONG, Jan 27 - The All Meghalaya Commercial Vehicles Owners and Drivers Union (AMCVODU) on Monday expressed concern over the entry of tourist vehicles from Assam to different tourist spots of the state.
AMCVODU president E Kurkalang said the entry of tourist vehicles from Assam into tourist spots of Meghalaya has affected the business of local tourist vehicles. The random entry of vehicles and luxury cars from outside into the state capital has created traffic jams, affecting offices, schools and colleges, besides affecting business of local tourist taxis, Kurkalang said.
He said AMCVODU can assist tourists by providing the required vehicles and local tourist guides.
Citing the example of Sikkim, Kurkalang said tourist vehicles not registered in Sikkim are allowed to enter state capital Gangtok, but thereafter local tourist taxis take over. He said the system has immensely helped local people get employment.
Kurkalang said Meghalaya should develop a similar system. The union also urged the government to fix the rates for tourist vehicles so that travel for tourists becomes hassle-free.
