Concern over absence of leadership in present-day Assamese society

GUWAHATI, March 16 - Several elderly citizens expressed concern at the absence of social and intellectual leadership in the present-day Assamese society which has resulted in degradation of the society like a rudderless boat.

The elderly citizens were participating in a discussion titled �Present-day Assamese society, challenges and opportunities�, held today at Pensioners� Bhawan here on the occasion of the monthly meeting of the Guwahati Senior Citizens Association (GSCA).

Initiating the discussion, DN Chakravartty said that in the earlier days when the Assamese society was confronted with serious crises generated by the British occupation, Assamese people looked forward for salvation towards the undisputed leaders like Anandaram Dhekial Phookan, Hem Chandra Barua, Gunabhiram Barua, Lakshminath Bezbaroa and Chandra Kumar Agarwala.

Even later, great leaders like Nabin Chandra Bordoloi, Gopinath Bordoloi and Tarun Ram Phookan led the Assamese society from a position of stagnation and despair towards the goal of self-assertion and dignity.

He said the present-day Assamese society does not have a single personality who can be universally accepted as an undisputed guardian and voice of the Assamese people.

Hem Sarma, secretary, culture and public relations read out the proceedings of the last meeting and referred to the activities of the association. Sectional reports were presented by Krishna Lahkar, Dr Biren Sarma and Madhavananda Datta Bordoloi. Pushpa Bora, a 95-year-old member presented a modern song, while Bimal Hazarika recited self-composed poems in Assamese, English and Bengali.

Anima Debi regaled the house with her lilting music. Bijulee Sarma recited a poem, while Gopal Krishna Hazarika presented Jyoti Sangeet. Mohit Gogoi expressed distress at the prevailing moral degradation in society and unruliness among the younger generation. He said that loss of leadership by the elderly section of society was responsible for social and moral degradation of the younger generation.

Jap India, a service society based in Kolkata made a power point presentation on healthcare for the elderly persons.
